Fake Academic Titles Infiltrate Nigerian University Systems

The integrity of the Nigerian higher education system is under intense scrutiny following reports of fraudulent academic titles bypassing the rigorous, decades-long process required to attain professorship. The controversy, highlighted through the Anthony Kila affair, reveals how individuals are allegedly using self-registered centres to manufacture credentials and leapfrog over legitimate scholars.

In the traditional Nigerian academic hierarchy, the journey to becoming a Professor is a grueling process that typically spans 10 to 15 years. A legitimate scholar must progress through several distinct stages, starting as an Assistant Lecturer, moving to Lecturer II, Lecturer I, Senior Lecturer, and Reader, before finally being considered for a Professorship.

This progression is not merely a matter of time but requires extensive peer-reviewed publications, surviving stringent external assessments, and successful defences before a University Senate.
