At least 20 people have died in a fatal road crash at Hawan Kibo in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. The crash occurred at about 5pm on Friday, October 2, along the Hawan Kibo bend, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The FRSC said preliminary findings indicated that brake failure caused the vehicle to lose control while descending the hill. Rescue officers evacuated injured victims to hospitals, while the bodies of those who died were taken to the Jos University Teaching Hospital mortuary.

The crash involved four vehicles: a Howo Sino truck, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Bummer bus operated by Yankari Express and a motorcycle. The FRSC said 25 people were involved, comprising 23 males and two females, with five people sustaining injuries while 20 males died.

FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed directed a thorough investigation into the crash, particularly the reported brake failure and loss of control. He also urged motorists and commercial vehicle operators to prioritise vehicle maintenance, roadworthiness and safe driving, especially on difficult sections of the highway.
