The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Area Command, has seized smuggled goods and other contraband with a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) of ₦2.469 billion as part of its intensified
operations against smuggling and economic sabotage. The Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, disclosed this on Thursday, September 17, 2026, during a press briefing at the Command’s headquarters in Idiroko, Ogun State.
According to Afeni, the seizures included 1,204 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 3,893 parcels of cannabis weighing 1.878 tonnes, 428 pneumatic tyres, 8,675 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), 24 bales of second-hand clothing, four sacks of used shoes and 500 litres of diesel. He attributed the seizures to intelligence-led enforcement operations and improved collaboration with other security and law enforcement agencies, saying the Command would continue to strengthen border security while facilitating legitimate trade.
A major highlight of the operation was the interception of a 2026 Range Rover Sport valued at ₦417.012 million in DPV. Afeni said the Command’s anti-smuggling operations had dealt significant blows to illicit trade networks operating across Ogun State. He also said the seizures demonstrated the impact of the Command’s enforcement strategies and intelligence gathering in disrupting the movement of prohibited and improperly imported goods through the border area.
The seized cannabis sativa was subsequently handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation. Receiving the items, the Commander of the NDLEA Idiroko Special Command, Olasumbo Akande, urged Nigerians to support efforts against drug abuse and the trafficking of illicit substances. He said security agencies operating in Idiroko would continue working together to prevent hard drugs and other illegal goods from entering Nigeria or being moved through the border as a transit route.
