The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to a thorough and conclusive investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who died while in custody in Minna, Niger State. The Corps said its Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, joined Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and other heads of agencies under the Ministry of Interior on a visit to Minna to commiserate with Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, the affected families and the people of the state. The death toll of 37 has been confirmed by the Niger State Government, while investigations are ongoing to establish exactly what caused the deaths.
During the visit, Governor Bago expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for its response and the steps already taken to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. The NSCDC said the Governor also acknowledged measures initiated by the Corps, including the deployment of a high-level team to support the investigation. The suspected miners had been arrested during enforcement operations around the M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto area of Minna on September 15 and 16 before the deaths were discovered at an NSCDC detention facility.
The NSCDC said it would ensure that all relevant circumstances surrounding the incident are properly established and stressed that it remains guided by due process, existing laws and regulations. The Corps said that where any breach of duty or responsibility is established, appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law. President Bola Tinubu has separately ordered a full and transparent investigation, directing that the circumstances of the arrests, detention conditions, number of detainees, medical attention provided and events leading to the deaths be examined.
The actual cause of death has not been conclusively established. Earlier reports referenced a possible disease outbreak, while survivors have alleged overcrowding, poor ventilation and difficulty breathing inside the detention facility. The Niger State Government has ordered forensic examinations and autopsies, while the NSCDC Niger State Commandant and other officials have been removed from their positions pending the investigation. The NSCDC said it extends its condolences to the bereaved families and reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, humane treatment and respect for human dignity.
