Opposition parties and political groups are intensifying efforts to form a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections, with a National Opposition Summit now scheduled for August 31, 2026, in Abuja.

The initiative is being spearheaded by the G-100, led by former APC National Vice Chairman, North-East, Salihu Lukman. The group says the summit will provide a platform for opposition parties and political actors to discuss strategies for presenting a stronger and more coordinated challenge to the APC.

The proposed alliance involves parties including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The G-100 has argued that opposition parties need to overcome their differences and consider working toward a common political objective, including the possibility of presenting a single presidential candidate against President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

The development gained further momentum after the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives met with the G-100 and agreed to deepen collaboration aimed at strengthening the opposition and providing Nigerians with a credible alternative to the APC.

However, the proposed alliance still faces challenges. While the SDP and PRP have confirmed their participation in the August 31 summit, the positions of the PDP and ADC remain uncertain, highlighting disagreements over leadership, presidential candidates and the structure of any potential coalition.

The summit is expected to determine whether the various opposition groups can move beyond individual ambitions and build a common platform capable of challenging the APC in the 2027 presidential election.
