Nigerian students have delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 Singapore International Mathematics Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC), winning multiple gold, silver, and bronze medals, with two students finishing among the world’s top 10 in one of the world’s most prestigious mathematics competitions.
Leading Nigeria’s impressive outing was Agu Chukwuka of Grundtvig International Secondary School, Oba, Anambra State, who won two gold medals and one bronze medal across the Mathematics Olympiad Contest, Math Warriors, and Math Master Mind events. His exceptional performance earned him 8th place globally in the Grade 7 Mathematics Olympiad Contest. Also making the global top 10 was Okpere-Udo Hallel of Graceland International School, Port Harcourt, who finished 2nd in the world in the Grade 10 Mathematics Olympiad Contest while winning one gold and one bronze medal.
Nigeria’s medal haul was further boosted by Nwawulu Chimgozirim Kevin of Grundtvig International Secondary School, who won gold in the Math Master Mind (Lower Secondary Division). Stanley Iduate Samson of Graceland International School and Adepetu Mofopefoluwa Oluwasemilore of Jephthah Comprehensive Secondary School, Port Harcourt, also secured gold medals in the Math Master Mind (Upper Secondary Division). Several other Nigerian students clinched silver and bronze medals, while others received honourable mentions.
The competition, held in Singapore from July 17 to 21, featured about 2,285 students from 40 countries and 1,113 schools, testing participants in advanced mathematics, logical reasoning, and critical-thinking challenges. The organisers said Nigeria’s remarkable performance highlights the country’s growing potential in STEM education and demonstrates that Nigerian students can compete successfully with the very best young mathematicians in the world.
