According to a report by The Sun on Sunday, July 26, 2026, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has spoken out about his thoughts on the 2027 presidential race, stating that Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is the frontrunner and that Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President, has very little chance of winning.

In an interview, he discussed his thoughts on the prominent politicians who are likely to run in the upcoming general election.

Lawal praised Obi’s leadership and said that the latter has earned a reputation for fairness.

He claims that these traits have helped elevate Obi to the forefront of the candidates vying for Nigeria’s presidency in 2027.

He explained his stance by saying it was based on his impressions of the politicians thought to be running for president.

According to Lawal, who ranked all of the likely candidates in the contest, Obi came out on top after considering their relative merits.

According to the ex-SGF, Obi is on par with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano State, in terms of political clout.

He implied that the two politicians have amassed substantial support, which might make them strong contenders for the upcoming election.

While acknowledging President Bola Tinubu’s continued significance in Nigerian politics, Lawal ranked him lower than Obi and Kwankwaso in his personally assessed performance.

He also gave former vice president Atiku Abubakar the lowest possible score and wrote off his chances of being re-elected.

“I’ll give them on my own scale. Peter Obi and Kwankwaso, I’ll pair them. They’ll be close to like 70 per cent. Bola, 50. Atiku, zero,” he stated.
