The Federal Government has unveiled Nigeria’s first Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod (Manu-Tech UniPod) at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State, in a move aimed at transforming universities into hubs for innovation, research commercialisation and industrial development.
The project is a partnership involving the Federal Government, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), TETFund, the Abia State Government and MOUAU. It is designed to bridge the gap between academic research and industry by supporting technology transfer, entrepreneurship, product development and job creation.
Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa said the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that Nigerian universities must move beyond producing graduates to becoming centres that create industries, technologies and wealth. The innovation hub will focus on areas such as artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, agro-processing, industrial automation and digital design.
The Federal Government said the Manu-Tech UniPod will serve as a pilot model to be replicated across the country’s geopolitical zones, with the goal of accelerating industrialisation, supporting local manufacturing and creating more opportunities for young innovators and entrepreneurs.
