Justice Muhammad Umar of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the remand of presidential aspirant and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
Sowore, the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, was ordered to remain in custody pending the hearing of an application filed by his new counsel seeking to set aside an earlier order revoking his bail.
At the last adjourned date, Sowore was absent from court, which prompted the prosecution to request the revocation of his bail, alleging delay tactics and non-compliance with court proceedings. However, at Monday’s sitting, he was present in court and represented by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Olumide Fusika.
In a brief ruling, Justice Umar ordered that Sowore be remanded pending the determination of his motion challenging the bail revocation and the bench warrant previously issued against him. The court also dismissed Sowore’s application seeking the judge’s recusal from the case on grounds of alleged bias.
The case has been adjourned until June 24 for hearing of the application.
Meanwhile, the Department of State Services (DSS) is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made false claims against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in posts published on his X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts.
