The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd.), has said Nigeria must strengthen its security architecture through local defence production, improved intelligence sharing, and continuous investment in the training of security personnel.
Musa made the call at the Nigerian People’s Strategic Conference and Defence Exhibition 2026, held in Abuja on June 13, 2026, where security stakeholders gathered to discuss practical ways to confront terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, cybercrime, and other threats facing the country.
According to the defence minister, Nigeria can no longer rely heavily on foreign military equipment, especially as global conflicts continue to disrupt access to critical security hardware. He stressed that local defence manufacturing has become a strategic necessity for national security and self-reliance.
He also highlighted the importance of stronger intelligence sharing among security agencies, noting that timely and credible information remains vital in preventing attacks, tracking criminal networks, and protecting vulnerable communities.
Musa further called for deeper collaboration between the government, private sector, traditional institutions, local communities, and citizens, saying insecurity cannot be defeated by the military alone.
He explained that Nigeria is pursuing practical reforms, strategic partnerships, and innovations that will strengthen national security and improve the operational capacity of security forces across the country.
The minister also received recognition at the event for his contributions to national security leadership and defence development, as organisers praised his efforts toward building a more modern and resilient security system.
