The Nigerian Army has continued to strengthen troop welfare and operational efficiency in the North-East theatre through its Welfare Flight Programme and a series of reforms aimed at enhancing the well-being of personnel engaged in counter-insurgency operations.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Welfare Flight for June 2026 successfully transported 332 military personnel into and out of the Theatre of Operation HADIN KAI. The welfare flight, conducted on 2 June 2026 using a chartered ValueJet aircraft, airlifted 174 personnel into the theatre while 158 personnel were moved out.

Since the inception of the initiative, a cumulative total of 33,097 military personnel have been transported into and out of the theatre, underscoring the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of its troops.

The Welfare Flight Programme enables soldiers serving in operational areas to periodically visit their families and loved ones, helping to strengthen family bonds, improve emotional well-being, and relieve the physical and psychological stress associated with prolonged deployment in conflict zones. The initiative has become a vital component of the Army’s efforts to maintain high morale and operational effectiveness among frontline troops.

In addition to the welfare flight programme, the Nigerian Army has implemented several reforms designed to boost morale, enhance operational effectiveness, and improve the overall welfare of personnel serving on the frontline.

One of the key measures is the upward review of troops’ allowances from ₦20,000 to ₦50,000 for soldiers across all ranks from Privates to Warrant Officers. This significant increase reflects the commitment of the military leadership to recognising and rewarding the sacrifices of troops engaged in ongoing counter-insurgency operations.

The reforms are in line with the “Soldier First” concept of the Chief of Army Staff, which prioritises the welfare, career development, and professional growth of personnel. The initiative continues to provide the necessary support framework for troops to perform their duties effectively and professionally.

The various welfare interventions have contributed significantly to improved morale among personnel, who continue to display resilience, dedication, and professionalism despite the challenges associated with operating in a complex security environment.
