Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai, has said Nigerian security agencies have the capacity to track bandits if they can locate ordinary citizens and social media influencers.

Buratai argued that with the level of intelligence and surveillance available to the country’s security agencies, criminal elements should not be impossible to trace.

According to him, it is difficult to believe that security operatives can locate civilians when necessary but struggle to track armed groups terrorising communities.

The former Army Chief said insecurity should be treated as a national crisis requiring serious coordination, intelligence gathering and commitment from all levels of government.

He also maintained that the fight against banditry and terrorism should not be left to the military alone, stressing the need for citizens, communities and institutions to play active roles.

Buratai’s comment comes amid renewed public anger over abductions, killings and attacks on schools and communities across different parts of the country.

His remarks are expected to fuel further debate on the capacity of security agencies to track and neutralise bandits operating in forests and rural communities.
