Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has officially commissioned the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia, describing the project as a major step toward building a modern, safe and sustainable transport system in the state.

The newly completed multimodal transport hub is designed to accommodate more than 340 buses at once and is connected to the state’s growing electric bus network.

According to Otti, 20 electric buses are already in operation, with more expected in the coming weeks.

The facility is named after Prof. Nnenna Nnennaya-Oti, the INEC Returning Officer in the 2023 Abia governorship election, whom Otti praised for her courage, integrity and patriotism during the electoral process.

The governor said the honour goes beyond one person, noting that it also recognises electoral officials, security operatives, party agents and citizens who resisted intimidation and defended democracy.

Speaking during the commissioning in an address titled “Raising the Bar”, Otti said Abia had moved beyond the era of small ambitions and would no longer accept limits placed on its potential.

He also commended Planet Projects Limited for delivering the facility, while appreciating the Commissioner for Transport, Dr Chimezie Ukaegbu, the SSA Transport, Dr Obioma Nwaogbe, and their team for helping bring the project to reality.

Otti urged residents and the host community to take ownership of the terminal, maintain cleanliness and protect the facility from vandalism.

He also called on Abians to pay their taxes regularly, stressing that sustainable development requires collective responsibility.
