Tinubu, wife empower Benue women with relief aid, cash grants

In a move to boost women affected by insecurity and economic challenges in Benue State, President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu have extended vital relief materials and empowerment packages through the Ministry of Women Affairs.

Minister Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, in a statement issued by her office, said on Saturday in Makurdi, personally delivered these items on their behalf, signaling the federal government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable women amid ongoing difficulties.

Benue, known for enduring repeated violence and displacement, welcomed the minister with a vibrant show of cultural pride and patriotism. Women and girls dressed in traditional attire lined the streets waving Nigerian flags as she arrived at the Airforce Airstrip, underscoring the community’s hope for renewed support.

At the Government House, the Minister met Governor Hyacinth Alia, Deputy Governor, Sam Ode, and key women’s affairs officials, including Commissioner Theresa Odachi Ikwue and Special Adviser Scholastica Bem-Sor.

The minister brought messages of solidarity from President Tinubu and the First Lady, while detailing the ministry’s multifaceted initiatives aimed at economic upliftment, protection against gender-based violence, support for vulnerable families, and leadership training for women.

The empowerment packages included 400 bags of rice, 20 bales of Ankara fabric, used clothing, pepper-grinding machines, and tailoring equipment distributed to women and needy households. Additionally, twenty women farmers received ₦1 million each, with an initial ₦500,000 already disbursed and the remainder due later this year.

“We are ensuring women have direct access to financial resources to strengthen their livelihoods and play a pivotal role in driving national progress,” Minister Imaan explained. She further extended support to survivors of gender-based violence, reaffirming the government’s protective stance.

As a mark of respect for her efforts in the state, the Tiv community the Minister with the traditional title Dooshima of Benue, meaning “The Love of Benue People,” and adorned her with their cultural regalia.

Governor Alia welcomed the federal assistance, emphasising his administration’s ongoing commitment to women’s empowerment, particularly among Internally Displaced Persons, through targeted appointments and programs.

The visit concluded amid heartfelt appreciation from both the people and government of Benue, who expressed gratitude to the federal leadership for their timely intervention during challenging times.
