2027: Abacha’s ex-CSO Al-Mustapha to run for president under SDP

Former Chief Security Officer to the late military ruler General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (retd.), has formally announced his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Al-Mustapha made the declaration on Tuesday during a visit to Minna, the Niger State capital, where he met with state party leaders and supporters.

He said his decision to join the race stemmed from his concerns about Nigeria’s worsening socio-economic conditions and the need for experienced and transparent leadership.

In his remarks to party stakeholders, Al-Mustapha stated that while the challenges facing the country are significant, they are not insurmountable if the right structures are put in place.

“The state of the nation is distressing, but Nigeria has what it takes to recover and grow. Before the party engagement, Al-Mustapha visited Mokwa to sympathise with victims of a recent flood disaster that displaced more than 200 residents. During the stop, he emphasised the role of preparedness and crisis management in national governance.

Reacting to the declaration, the SDP Chairman in Niger State, Buhari Yarima, expressed optimism about the party’s prospects in the 2027 polls. He said Al-Mustapha’s record in public service would help the SDP gain broader national appeal.

“We welcome his ambition and trust his experience will help reposition our country,” Yarima said.
