Hon. Aliyu Boya Wakili Calls for National Unity at NIPR Lecture Honoring Icons of Peace

In a powerful speech at the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) Annual Lecture Series, Hon. Barr. Aliyu Boya Wakili, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Police Institutions, paid tribute to Nigeria’s icons of peace and reconciliation. The event, held in Awka at the Odimegwu Ojukwu University, honored His Royal Majesty, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, and celebrated the theme “Achieving Peace and Reconciliation in Nigeria; The Public Relations Approach.”

Addressing an audience that included notable dignitaries, Wakili emphasized the vital role of leaders like Igwe Achebe and NIPR President Dr. Ike Neliaku in promoting peace and unity across Nigeria. He acknowledged Igwe Achebe as a longstanding symbol of national harmony, stating, “I have admired His Royal Majesty since my school days. He is an Icon of Peace and Unity in Nigeria, and it is my honor to stand here today and express my gratitude to him for his contributions to our nation.”

Wakili also praised the NIPR under Dr. Ike Neliaku’s leadership, which he described as a testament to the power of public relations to foster national cohesion. “If I had the chance to choose another profession, I would be a PR practitioner,” he noted, reflecting on the value of the profession in building bridges and fostering reconciliation across diverse communities.

Drawing attention to the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria, Wakili highlighted the importance of celebrating those who work tirelessly for peace, even when their efforts are not widely acknowledged. He urged attendees to recognize “the quiet heroes” who bridge divisions with compassion and courage, often at personal cost. He explained that these individuals serve as beacons of hope and are instrumental in transforming societies through small acts of kindness and persistent dedication to unity.

In his role as a public servant, Wakili affirmed his own commitment to peace and legal integrity, noting his focus on a police institution that prioritizes compliance with the law over strict enforcement. He expressed gratitude to the people of Anambra State for their warm hospitality and emphasized the need for all Nigerians to commit to building a harmonious and peaceful society.

As the event concluded, Wakili left the audience with a call to action, challenging them to be “architects of peace” and to build a future defined by empathy and mutual respect. In his closing words, he expressed his hope for a Nigeria strengthened by individuals who embrace the spirit of reconciliation and work towards a world worthy of the dreams of all Nigerians.

This event underscored the essential role of public relations in nation-building and celebrated leaders dedicated to advancing peace and unity across Nigeria.
