President Bola Tinubu has forwarded the 2026–2028 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) to the Senate for legislative consideration, setting the stage for the presentation of next year’s national budget. The transmission, a routine step in Nigeria’s annual budget cycle, establishes the fiscal assumptions and expenditure parameters that will guide government spending over the next three years. The document had earlier received approval from the Federal Executive Council on 5 December. During Thursday’s plenary, Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, read the president’s communication to lawmakers. Jibrin subsequently referred the MTEF/FSP to the Senate Committee on Finance, directing the panel to submit its report by Wednesday, 17 December.
In line with this development, the Senate adjourned plenary to enable relevant committees to begin work on the fiscal framework and to continue the ongoing screening of ambassadorial nominees.
