President Bola Tinubu has officially appointed ABBA Aliyu as the substantive Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), a move aimed at enhancing the agency’s mission to provide reliable electricity to underserved communities across Nigeria.

The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the appointment, effective from January 23, 2025, marks the beginning of an initial four-year term for Aliyu, who has been serving as the acting managing director since March 2024.

He highlighted that Aliyu brings over two decades of experience in energy and organizational development within both the private and public sectors.

His extensive background includes pivotal roles in Nigeria’s power sector, particularly in both on-grid and off-grid projects, as well as significant contributions to water resources and transportation sectors.

Prior to his confirmation, Aliyu led the Project Management Unit at the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP) and held senior positions at Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading PLC (NBET), where he served as General Manager of Corporate Services and Deputy General Manager.

His leadership in these roles has been instrumental in advancing various initiatives aimed at improving electricity access across Nigeria.

President Tinubu expressed confidence that Aliyu’s vast expertise will be crucial in driving forward the REA’s objectives and contributing to his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda focused on sustainable energy solutions. The President urged Aliyu to uphold transparency and accountability in all undertakings while leading the agency towards its goal of electrifying unserved and underserved regions throughout Nigeria.
