Nick Reiner was arrested after the bodies of his mother and father, Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner, were found in the couple’s LA home. Prosecutors say Reiner now faces first degree murder charges.
Nick Reiner, the son of Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner, will be charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the killing of his parents, Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman told a press conference Tuesday.
Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were found dead in their LA home on Sunday.
Nick Reiner was arrested without resisting in the Exposition Park area about four miles (6.4 kilometers) away from the crime scene several hours after his parents’ bodies were discovered, police said.
What did prosecutors say?
Prosecutors said there was enough evidence gathered by Los Angeles detectives to suspect Nick Reiner in the killing of his parents.
The district attorney said a knife was used in the killings, but shared no details about the investigation or the circumstances of the killings.
Police have not shared any information about a possible motive.
LA district attorney Hochman said the first degree murder charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison, or the death penalty.
“No decision at this point has been made with respect to the death penalty,” he added.
Prosecutors said they would formally file the charges later Tuesday.
Reiner had been expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
However, attorney Alan Jackson said he was not brought to the courthouse for medical reasons. Reiner had been held without bail at a Los Angeles County since he was booked on suspicion of murder on Sunday night.
Jackson did not provide further details on the case, and Reiner has not yet entered a plea.
Who was Rob Reiner?
Rob Reiner, 78, was a prominent name in Hollywood, and was known for directing popular films like “A Few Good Men,” “When Harry Met Sally” and “The Princess Bride.”
He began his career as an actor in the groundbreaking 1970s sitcom “All in the Family.”
Rob was the son of comedy legend Carl Reiner.
He met his wife, photographer Michele Singer, while directing “When Harry Met Sally.” The couple got married in 1989 and had three children together.
Nick Reiner, 32, was the couple’s middle child, and had been public about his struggles with substance abuse and homelessness.
