The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed satisfaction with the progress made by the party’s National Caretaker Working Committee and approved the timetable for upcoming congresses and the national convention slated for later in March.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its 106th meeting held on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, in Abuja, NEC commended the caretaker team led by Hon Abdulrahman Mohammed for its efforts in stabilising the party and steering it through the ongoing transitional phase.

The committee noted the successful conduct of the ward and local government congresses across the states and expressed confidence that the forthcoming state congresses, scheduled for the weekend, would be conducted peacefully and transparently in line with the PDP constitution and guidelines.

NEC equally approved the conduct of zonal congresses in two weeks’ time, describing them as key steps toward the national convention scheduled to hold on March 29 and 30, 2026, where a new National Working Committee (NWC) is expected to emerge.

The body also welcomed recent Court of Appeal judgments affirming the leadership and authority of the caretaker committee, noting that the rulings had strengthened the party’s internal democratic processes.

Calling for unity and reconciliation, NEC emphasised that “the strength of the PDP lies in its capacity to resolve internal disputes through dialogue and mutual respect”. Members were urged to shelve further litigation, especially any move to approach the Supreme Court, in the interest of party unity and stability.

As part of modernisation efforts, NEC approved the expansion of the party’s electronic membership registration (e‑registration) to improve transparency, grassroots participation and efficiency in party administration.

NEC also reviewed the revised timetable for the 2027 general elections released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and directed all party organs to begin preparations in compliance with electoral timelines. According to the approved PDP timetable, the submission of the membership register will take place on April 10, 2026, while the state assembly primaries will follow on May 2, 2026. The National Assembly primaries are scheduled for May 9, 2026, the governorship primaries for May 16, 2026, and the presidential primaries for May 25, 2026.

The committee further announced the composition of various sub‑committees to organise the forthcoming national convention, including those for Electoral, Accreditation, Security, Media and Publicity, Venue and Entertainment, Accommodation and Transport, Finance, Medical, Contact and Mobilisation, and Protocol.

In a firm statement, NEC condemned the recent attack on party members during congresses in Oyo State, describing it as “unfortunate, unacceptable and contrary to democratic values”. It called on security agencies to investigate the incident and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.

Reaffirming the PDP’s dedication to democracy and national unity, NEC urged members nationwide to remain disciplined and focused as preparations intensify for state, zonal and national conventions.

“The PDP remains the most credible platform for responsible leadership and national development,” the communiqué concluded, expressing renewed confidence and unity among party leaders as the 2027 electoral season approaches.
