NRC condemns assault on UI lecturer, orders investigation

Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, has condemned the alleged assault on a lecturer from the University of Ibadan (UI) at the Obafemi Awolowo Train Station in Moniya, Ibadan, describing the incident as unacceptable.

In a statement he personally signed, Opeifa said the Corporation had taken note of media reports regarding the alleged assault on Dr Mikail Abdussalam at the station and expressed serious concern over the development.

He stated that harassment; intimidation or any form of misconduct toward passengers or members of the public is not tolerated and does not reflect the values and operational standards of the Corporation.

According to him, the NRC management has ordered an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Opeifa noted that any personnel found to have acted in violation of the Corporation’s professional and public service code of conduct would face appropriate disciplinary measures in line with the established regulations and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Corporation also expressed regret over the incident and apologised to the lecturer for the distress caused.

NRC reiterated its commitment to ensuring that passengers and visitors across its stations are treated with dignity, respect and professionalism at all times, adding that steps were being taken to reinforce adherence to customer service standards across its facilities to prevent a recurrence
