Israel: Gunman ‘neutralized’ after deadly shooting in Haifa

Police have said a gunman opened fire in Haifa, just weeks after a stabbing attack in the same city left one dead.

Authorities said the attacker rammed his car into a bus stop before stabbing and shooting at people

One person was killed and at least one other was seriously injured by a gunman who opened fire close to the northern Israeli city of Haifa on Monday, according to first responders.

The Israeli police said that they had “neutralized” the suspect at a junction just outside the city.

“A terrorist opened fire at civilians and was immediately neutralized by police forces present at the scene,” a police statement said. They did not elaborate on the nationality of the attacker, but the term “terrorist” suggests that they think he was Palestinian.

What do we know about the Haifa attack?

The attacker reportedly drove into a group of people at a bus stop before getting out of his car.

According to reports, he first attacked people with a knife and then opened fire.

The Magen David Adom emergency services said that a 75-year-old man was killed by the gunfire.

Another 20-year-old man was receiving urgent treatment for his injuries.

The first responders said they had given “medical treatment to a young man … who had been hit by a vehicle and suffered penetrating injuries in the attack.”

First attack in Israel since end of ceasefire

An attack at a bus stop in Haifa just three weeks ago also resulted in a death and several injuries.

Monday’s attack was the first since Israel ended a negotiated ceasefire with the Hamas militant group in Gaza and resumed strikes and a ground offensive.

There have been numerous attacks by Palestinian militants in Israel since the beginning of the war with Hamas that was triggered by an attack by Palestinian militant groups in southern Israel.

Israeli strikes have since killed over 50,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to data from the enclave’s Health Ministry on Sunday.
