Illegal LGA Caretaker: Gov. Fintir’s Impeachment Moves Thickens

The call for the impeachment of Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has thickened. Sources say, some members of the Adamawa state House of Assembly has commenced secret moves to trigger impeachment proceedings against the governor.

On January 11th 2022, Governor Fintiri approved the appointment of Caretaker Committee Chairmen and their Deputies to oversee affairs at the 21 Local Government Councils in the State.  The committees were inaugurated on January 13th 2022.

Some political observers say, the governor has not committed any impeachable offence, because the State Assembly has approved the caretaker committees, thus there is law backing the governor’s action. They further argued that, since the Adamawa state electoral commission couldn’t conduct the local council’s polls as when due, the government did the right thing by constituting the caretaker committees. Meanwhile, the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission has fixed April 9th 2022 as Election Day for the 21 local councils.

The opposition APC has insisted that the LGA Caretaker Committees are illegal and alien to the 1999 Nigerian Constitution- different judgements including judgements of the Supreme Court have declared it illegal. Thus, the inauguration of the caretaker committees by Governor Fintiri constitutes a gross abuse of power which can premise impeachment proceedings.

The public and political commentators will watch with keen interest the secret moves to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Umaru Fintiri by some members of the Adamawa House of Assembly
