Fire service averts major disaster as blaze razes three shops in Ibadan

A swift intervention by the Oyo State Fire Services Agency on Monday night prevented a major disaster after a fire gutted three shops on Kudeti Street, opposite SA Filling Station, in the Jericho area of Ibadan.

The incident occurred at about 11:10 p.m. when sparks from high-tension cables ignited combustible materials in the prefabricated bamboo shops built along the fence of a nearby estate.

According to the Acting Chief Fire Superintendent (ACFS), Bamidele Samsudeen, who led the firefighting operation, firemen responded promptly to a distress call and were able to stop the blaze from spreading to nearby residential buildings and other properties. No casualties were recorded, and properties worth millions of naira were saved due to the timely intervention of our officers,” Samsudeen said.

The Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Moroof Adebayo Akinwande, commended the personnel for their swift action. He urged residents to maintain a safe distance from both high and low-voltage electrical lines, particularly during the ember months when fire outbreaks are more frequent.

Akinwande also advised members of the public to report fire incidents promptly and provide accurate addresses to enable rapid response from emergency services.
