Fire guts Kano varsity, destroys property

A fire outbreak at the North-West University Kano city campus on Thursday destroyed property worth millions of Naira.

Even though no life was lost, a staff member of the institution sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical attention in the hospital.

The inferno, which started around 11:20 am, affected the offices of the Head of Department and lecturers in the Information and Communication Technology department, and was said to have been caused by an electrical spark.

A security guard, trained in firefighting, was rushed to the university clinic after suffering from smoke inhalation while attempting to contain the flames.

Firefighters from both the Kano State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service responded promptly, preventing the fire from spreading further. Confirming the incident, the Director of Kano State Fire Service, Sani Anas, said the situation was brought under control before it could escalate to other sections of the building.

Also, the University Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mukhtar Kurawa, said while the fire had been successfully extinguished, the full extent of the damage was yet to be determined. “We cannot quantify the losses at this time, but we are thankful to God that no lives were lost,” he stated.

He further highlighted the university’s policy requiring all electrical appliances to be switched off at the end of the day to enhance safety, reduce energy consumption, and lower costs.

“Routine inspections are carried out to ensure compliance across all departments”, Kurawa added.
