Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai will be arraigned by the Department of State Services (DSS) on February 25 for alleged cybercrime and breach of national security.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the date for the arraignment was fixed by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court after she was assigned the case by the Chief Judge, Justice John Tsoho.
The DSS filed a three-count criminal charge against El-Rufai over his involvement in wiretapping the telephone lines of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
The charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/99/2026 is instituted by the Nigerian secret police.
El-Rufai is accused of breaching the Cybercrimes Prohibition Act (2024) and the Nigerian Communications Act (2003).
The offence is said to be contrary to and punishable under Section 12(1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024.
After being detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over corruption allegations, the former governor was granted administrative bail at about 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
However, El-Rufai was thereafter taken into custody by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
Speaking on Wednesday, ICPC’s spokesperson, John Odey, said, “Malam Nasiru El-Rufai is in the custody of the commission in connection with ongoing investigations.”
