Berlin airport halts takeoffs, landings for second day

The airport which serves Germany’s capital and the surrounding Brandenburg state is cancelling flights as of Friday morning due to black ice and freezing rain.

Passengers were stranded at Germany’s third-busiest airport amid a snowstorm affecting large swathes of the country

Berlin Brandenburg Airport said Friday it is suspending flight operations in the morning due to poor weather conditions.

“Due to weather conditions, no take-offs or landings are currently possible,” the airport said in a statement on its website.

The airport already saw scores of cancelations on Thursday due to freezing rain.

Berlin Brandenburg is Germany’s third-busiest airport after the international transit hubs Frankfurt and Munich. It is located in the town of Schönefeld, which lies just south of the German capital and is part of the eastern Brandenburg state.

The cold weather already caused cancelations on Thursday

Germany’s DPA news agency cited an airport spokeswoman as saying it was unclear when flights would resume as the airport was being hit by persistent freezing rain and black ice.

She said while airport personnel had worked to clear runways overnight, this was only partially successful and surfaces remained slippery.

The spokeswoman advised travelers to continue regularly checking the status of flgihts before coming to the airport.

Northern, eastern Germany see travel disruptions

Meanwhile, Germany’s national weather service (DWD) warned of freezing rain and black ice in swathes of northeastern Germany, while stressing that the situation was likely to improve over the day and with temperatures staying near 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit).

On Thursday, police reported that there had been multiple accidents on the Autobahn 10 highway near Brandenburg capital Potsdam, causing some 19 injuries.

Potsdam lies just southwest of the city of Berlin and is part of its metropolitan area.

There were also rail disruptions on the line between Berlin and Hamburg in northern Germany.

Milder weather was predicted for much of the south and west of the country, with maximum temperatures expected to reach 10 degrees Celsius along the Rhine River over the weekend.
