The Bayelsa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has downplayed the political significance of Senator Seriake Dickson’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dickson, who is the senator representing Bayelsa West and a former governor of Bayelsa State, announced his resignation from the PDP on Thursday, citing internal crises and poor leadership within the party.
He described the PDP, once dominant in Nigeria, as a party in serious decline and formally joined the NDC, where he was presented with membership card number 001.
Dickson said the NDC would provide a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political space and vowed to resist any attempts to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.
Reacting to the move, Bayelsa APC chairman Warman Ogoriba dismissed concerns over the NDC’s prospects in the state.
“That party can never be a threat to us in the state. APC is formidable; we have structures across the state. APC is a people-centred party, with the interest of Bayelsans at heart,” Ogoriba said.
He further added, “We are not disturbed by what he said today. You don’t win an election on social media.”
