Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on the newly inaugurated National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) to ensure that its operations, particularly staff welfare, promotions and recruitment, reflect the principle of federal character. A statement released on Sunday by his media aide, Jackson Udom, stated that Akpabio made the call on Thursday during a maiden visit by the Chairman and members of the Sixth NASC to his office, shortly after their appointment.

While congratulating the commissioners, the Senate President said the leadership of the National Assembly was confident in their capacity to deliver, describing their selection as a deliberate choice based on experience and maturity. “The leadership of both chambers made very good choices. I have no doubt that with your pedigrees you will deliver on the mandate given to you,” Akpabio said.

He added that the diverse professional backgrounds of the commissioners should translate into improved management of the Commission’s responsibilities. He said the NASC would consolidate on the achievements of past commissions while working to restore public and institutional confidence in its ability to discharge its statutory responsibilities.

The Chairman also disclosed that the Commission had proposed the creation of a Council of former Presiding Officers of the National Assembly, alongside plans for the reintroduction and construction of new National Assembly Legislative Quarters.
