The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, says national unity, modern technology and a strengthened security architecture are critical to addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
A statement by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of Defence, Leah Katung-Babatunde, re- echoed this at an engagement tagged “Promise to Proof: The Renewed Hope Conversation.”
The Defence Minister advocated the reintroduction of modernised, technology-driven tollgates across major highways to strengthen security surveillance, track vehicle movements and identify criminal elements, and called for a streamlined national identification system integrating biometrics, facial recognition and unique identification numbers to close security loopholes and improve intelligence gathering.
He noted that while the military would continue to support internal security operations where necessary, efforts were underway to strengthen police capacity and ease the burden of prolonged deployments on military personnel.
The statement further stressed that Nigeria’s greatest security challenge is not a lack of resources or military firepower, but internal divisions among its citizens and urged Nigerians to rise above ethnic, religious and regional differences, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that citizens can safely farm, travel and conduct business across the country.
