The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a suspected drug kingpin allegedly linked to the largest heroin seizure recorded at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
The development follows investigations into a major heroin shipment intercepted at the Lagos airport, where NDLEA operatives previously recovered 49.70kg of high-grade heroin concealed inside metal-cutting machines. The investigation uncovered an organised trafficking network operating across several countries.
According to the NDLEA, the syndicate had links across Nigeria, South Africa, Mozambique, Europe and the United States. Investigators traced the shipment to several members of the network and identified a suspected Nigerian kingpin during the operation.
The agency said its investigation also led to the arrest of other suspected members of the syndicate and the recovery of additional heroin, while several bank accounts and properties allegedly linked to the network were traced and targeted for forfeiture.
The NDLEA said the arrests form part of its wider efforts to dismantle international drug trafficking networks operating through Nigeria and bring those behind the movement of illicit drugs to justice.
