Asiya El-Rufai, wife of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has revealed that the family strongly opposed his return to active politics after his two terms as governor, but that a personal public plea from President Bola Tinubu changed everything.
Speaking on Arise TV, Asiya said, “I did not want my husband to go back into politics because it has taken its toll on us. But for Malam, public service is a calling. He believes that if he can still contribute, he will. President Tinubu said on national television that he will not get down from the podium until Malam agrees to work with him. And yet here we are today. The President may not have the power to stop anything, but he has the power to tell them to do the right thing,” she said.
Asiya also spoke passionately about the loyalty her husband showed Tinubu, revealing that El-Rufai fought publicly and even took legal action to uphold a gentleman’s agreement that power should rotate to the South in 2023, a fight she claimed put him at odds with former President Buhari before he died.
