Asiya El-Rufai, wife of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has rejected claims by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) that her husband arranged a political meeting while receiving medical treatment.
Speaking in an interview with Arise TV, she said, “Malam was sitting in the hospital reception area. There were people already there. Malam is a prominent person, people come to greet him. If, in the process, something went wrong and people they didn’t want to be there happened to be present, how can you blame him? He had conversations in a public place. It was not a closed-door meeting. It’s not as if he called someone specifically to come.”
Asiya also challenged the logistics of the ICPC’s claim, noting that her husband had no means to organise anything. “You notified him at 7:00 a.m. He doesn’t even have access to a phone. So how exactly is it that he arranged a meeting with politicians?” she said.
She then widened her concern beyond her husband’s case, warning that the arrest of the doctor treating El-Rufai was a danger to Nigeria’s medical profession.
