Major General Abubakar Rabe (rtd), who died in bandits’ captivity two weeks after his abduction, was laid to rest Saturday in Katsina in a solemn ceremony attended by family, senior military officers, government officials, and grieving residents. Abducted alongside his wife on May 30 along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli road in Matazu LGA, the former military spokesman’s funeral was marked by Qur’anic recitations and open weeping, as mourners called his death a “tragic irony for a man who dedicated his life to defending Nigeria.”

Rabe’s death has triggered widespread reactions online, with Nigerians questioning public safety if a general could die in captivity. “We’re not safe if a General can die this way,” many netizens wrote, demanding intensified operations against terrorists and bandits. Meanwhile, his widow, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, remains in the abductors’ custody, amplifying calls for urgent rescue action as the nation mourns one of its “finest military officers.”
