NLC spokesperson, Benson Upah, said while it was commendable that governors were discussing a wage review, ₦100,000 was far below what Nigerian workers need to survive under the current economic situation.

His reaction followed comments by Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who said governors were considering a new national minimum wage of ₦100,000.

Upah argued that inflation, naira depreciation, higher electricity tariffs, rising petrol prices and reduced purchasing power have made a much higher wage necessary.

According to him, a realistic living wage under the current economic conditions should be around ₦1 million.

The NLC also insisted that government revenues have improved and workers should be treated as the country’s greatest asset.
