The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to ensuring credible and secure elections as he hosted the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, in Abuja.
The high-level meeting focused on strengthening security architecture ahead of upcoming electoral activities, including the Ekiti and Osun off-cycle governorship elections, bye-elections, and the 2027 general elections. Both parties emphasized the need for proactive strategies to tackle rising security challenges that could threaten the electoral process.
INEC Chairman, Professor Amupitan, highlighted the importance of creating a safe voting environment for all Nigerians, especially Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs), urging enhanced training and preparedness of security personnel.
In response, IGP Disu disclosed that the police have already activated key measures such as intelligence-driven operations to curb political violence, improved security for electoral materials and personnel, and closer collaboration with other security agencies. He also stressed efforts to combat misinformation during the election period.
The police boss assured that officers deployed for election duties will strictly adhere to the Constitution and the Electoral Act, noting that personnel are undergoing intensive training on professionalism and human rights. He warned that any officer found engaging in misconduct would face disciplinary action.
Reaffirming the Force’s commitment, the IGP called for stronger collaboration with INEC and other stakeholders to guarantee peaceful, transparent, and credible elections across the country.
