According to a report by The Punch on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced his intention to seek a second term in office, stating that ongoing security challenges across parts of the country will not compel him to leave power.

The President made the declaration while receiving Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang and other stakeholders during a meeting, where issues of national security and governance were discussed.

Addressing the delegation, Tinubu said attempts to use insecurity as a political tool against his administration would not succeed, suggesting that such actions align with the interests of his opponents.

You are playing to the hand of agents, including my own enemies, who want to use insecurity to get rid of me,” he said.

The President further emphasized his determination to remain in office and contest in the next election cycle, despite criticism over the current security situation. “I’m a very stubborn politician. I just refuse to go. And I will campaign for my second term,” Tinubu stated.

His remarks come amid heightened public concern over åttåcks by armed groups, kîdnãppings, and killings reported in various regions of the country.

The developments have prompted reactions from opposition figures and civil society groups, who have called for intensified efforts by the Federal Government to address the situation.

The meeting with Plateau stakeholders forms part of ongoing engagements between the presidency and state leaders on issues affecting peace, governance, and national development.

Tinubu reiterated his administration’s position on security, maintaining that measures are being implemented to support law enforcement and restore stability nationwide.

The President, who assumed office in May 2023, is expected to complete his first term in 2027, when Nigerians will return to the polls to elect a new leader or renew the mandate of the incumbent.
