The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has warned that it may embark on a nationwide protest if urgent steps are not taken to address the worsening economic hardship facing Nigerian workers.
The warning was issued in a communiqué after the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, where leaders reviewed the state of the nation and conditions affecting workers.
According to the TUC, rising inflation, high fuel prices, electricity tariff increases, and insecurity have significantly reduced workers’ purchasing power and made daily survival increasingly difficult.
The union stressed that if there is no improvement in the economic situation, it would be left with no option but to mobilise workers nationwide in defence of their welfare.
It also called on the Federal Government to take immediate action to stabilise the economy, including measures to reduce the cost of living, improve electricity supply, and address insecurity across the country.
The development comes ahead of the 2026 May Day celebrations, with labour leaders intensifying calls for policies that prioritise workers’ welfare, job security, and social protection.
