‎In a recent statement via his official X account, Professor of Political Economy, Pat Utomi, has raised concerns over what he described as the growing influence of money on Nigeria’s legal and judicial systems, warning that it could harm the country’s future.

‎”May the stone of love of money which makes senior lawyers and some judges sacrifice the future of Nigeria and their own children by unjust deeds regarding electoral laws and the rule of law be rolled away,” he wrote.

‎In his post, Utomi expressed worry that some senior lawyers and members of the judiciary may be prioritizing personal financial gain over justice and national interest and suggested that this trend is affecting the proper interpretation and application of electoral laws in the country.

‎According to him, when legal decisions are influenced by money rather than fairness, it weakens public trust in democratic institutions and stressed that the rule of law must remain the foundation of Nigeria’s democracy, especially during electoral processes.

‎Utomi noted that actions taken by those in positions of authority today could have lasting consequences for future generations and warned that compromising justice for short-term benefits may not only damage the nation but also affect the lives of the children of those involved.

‎The professor called for a return to integrity and accountability within the legal profession and urged judges and lawyers to uphold ethical standards and resist any temptation to manipulate the law for personal gain.

‎He highlighted the importance of strong institutions in sustaining democracy and explained that when citizens lose confidence in the judiciary, it can lead to political instability and reduced participation in elections.

‎Utomi encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and demand accountability from public officials and stated that democracy can only thrive when leaders and institutions act in the best interest of the people.
