Tension has gripped Rugange community in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State following a violent attack by suspected gunmen that left one person dead and two villages set ablaze.
Local sources said the attack occurred on Sunday afternoon and intensified toward the evening, sending residents fleeing for safety.
According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen stormed the area and unleashed violence on surrounding settlements. One person was reportedly killed during the attack, while two villages, Korgosei and Sabon Pegi, were completely burnt.
Residents said several houses and property were destroyed in the incident, though the exact extent of the damage is yet to be fully determined.
The cause of the attack remains unclear as at the time of filing this report. However, Rugange and neighbouring communities in the Lamurde axis have recently been experiencing intermittent tensions linked to communal disagreements between the Tsobo and Bachama ethnic groups.
Security agencies are yet to issue an official statement on the latest incident, but residents say the development has heightened fear in the area, with many families displaced.
Community leaders have previously called for stronger security presence and dialogue to address the lingering disputes in the area and prevent further escalation.
More details are expected as the situation unfolds.
