Rivers Assembly suspends Fubara, deputy’s impeachment

The Rivers State House of Assembly has halted impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, following the intervention of President Bola Tinubu.

The decision was reached during Thursday’s resumed plenary in Port Harcourt, marking a dramatic pause in a political standoff that had gripped the oil-rich state since the start of the year.

Lawmakers had earlier initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara and Odu, citing allegations of gross misconduct. The accusations included the demolition of the State Assembly complex and claims of spending public funds without legislative approval.

The move had heightened tensions within the state’s political landscape, raising concerns about governance stability and a potential constitutional crisis in Rivers.

However, following reported high-level engagement by President Tinubu, the Assembly resolved to suspend the process, signaling a temporary de-escalation of the dispute.

Details of the agreement that led to the suspension were not immediately disclosed, and it remains unclear whether the impeachment move has been permanently withdrawn or merely paused.

The development is expected to reshape political negotiations in Rivers State in the coming days, as stakeholders watch closely for the next steps in the power struggle.
