President Bola Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York this year.
President Tinubu, who recently returned from official visits to China and the United Kingdom, has opted to remain in Nigeria to focus on pressing domestic challenges, particularly in the aftermath of the country’s recent devastating floods. The decision underscores the President’s commitment to addressing urgent national issues while still maintaining Nigeria’s active participation in international diplomacy.
Vice President Shettima will represent the country at the high-level General Debate, which runs from Tuesday, September 24, to Saturday, September 28, 2024. The theme for this year’s session is “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations.”
Vice President Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement, participate in crucial sideline events, and engage in bilateral meetings with other world leaders. His presence at UNGA 79 is expected to highlight Nigeria’s stance on global issues such as peacebuilding, climate change, and sustainable development, while also reinforcing the country’s diplomatic ties on the international stage.
The 79th session of the UNGA will gather world leaders and policymakers to deliberate on key global challenges, with an emphasis on inclusivity, sustainability, and cooperation.
