Armed men suspected to be robbers have killed a serving female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Kaduna State.
The lady, identified as Grace Chalya Silas, was murdered while on morning keep-fit exercise, along Barnawa Government Reserved Area (GRA) in Kaduna.
The Guardian learnt that the University of Jos graduate was killed and robbed while jogging on Wednesday morning.
Already, friends and former coursemates of the victim have taken to Facebook to mourn her.
“No na! What is really happening to the Jossite and Special Education department? We haven’t finished mourning Kekefas Emmanuel and now it’s Chalya, brutally killed in Kaduna during her morning jog while serving her fatherland. May your killers know no peace chalya. This is too much to bear,” one Comfort Elisha wrote.
However, when contacted, spokesperson for Kaduna State Police Command, Mansur Hassan, said the police are already on a manhunt of the robbers.
“I want to assure you that within one week, we will get them and prosecute them,” he said.
Giving an account of the unfortunate incident, Hassan said: “The corps member was doing exercise at about 6:30a.m., at Barnawa GRA when the robbers hit her with a knife from behind, stole her handset, and ran away.
“She was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty at Harmony Hospital, where she was rushed to by some good Samaritan, for medical attention.
“Let me tell you that the Commissioner of Police has taken the matter up. He met with the top-ranking officers in the Command with a view to ensuring that thorough investigation is carried out, and the robbers arrested and prosecuted.”
Hassan urged the public to remain calm and advise the citizens to be vigilant of their movements, saying people should not keep late hours at night or embark on early hour activities in secluded areas.
